herb_fosterHerb L. Foster of Martha’s Vineyard will speak about “Yiddish and Jive” at the Woods Hole Public Library on Saturday, November 8, at 2 PM. His presentation will be lively and active, involving attendees in various word plays.

Herb’s experience as a former school teacher and administrator, college professor, NPR program host, and workshop presenter will result in an interesting, educational, and delightful presentation. He has a deep knowledge of, and respect for, the Jewish and black communities.

Herb was most recently seen at the Woods Hole Library with his co-authors speaking about their recent book about Martha’s Vineyard and World War II. Presently, he is completing the manuscript for ”Ghetto to Ghetto: Yiddish and Jive in Everyday Life”.

Born in the Bronx, he grew up in Brooklyn, NY. After serving in WW II and in the occupation of Japan with the regular U.S. Army, Herb took his BS and MA from New York University, School of Education; and his Ed. D. from Columbia University, Teachers College. His dissertation involved Black English. Herb is a Professor Emeritus, Graduate School of Education, State University of New York at Buffalo. Prior to his 28-1?2 years at SUNY/Buffalo, he was a teacher and administrator in the NYC Public Schools for 17 years. Sixteen of those years were in schools for emotionally disturbed and socially maladjusted children.

Herb is an elected Trustee of the Edgartown Free Public Library, President Emeritus of the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, a former 2-term Trustee-MV NAACP, a member of the Dukes County Search and Rescue Team until it dissolved, a member of American Legion Post # 257, and a Boy Scout District Member at-Large. Herb intends to become, if he is not already, the oldest continually registered Boy Scout in the United States.
