The Woods Hole Public Library will host a St. Patrick’s Day screening of the new film Small Things Like These on Monday, March 17, at 6:00 PM. Adapted from the Booker Prize nominated novel by Claire Keegan, Small Things Like These takes place over Christmas in 1985, when devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths of his own. The film reveals truths about Ireland’s Magdalene laundries — horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s until 1996, ostensibly to reform “fallen young women.” Like the book, the film adaptation is a quiet force that stays with viewers long after the credits roll. Brianna Zigler from the AV Club says, “The film functions as a reminder that everyone within them has the power to do good—even if it feels inconsequential, and especially if it feels like a risk.”
