The Library will be closed for our regular hours on Wednesday, June 19, in honor of Juneteenth, but we will celebrate the holiday in the evening with a free screening of The Color Purple in collaboration with the MBL Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Based on Alice Walker’s award-winning novel, this 2023 film adaptation also pulls inspiration from the Tony award-winning stage musical of the same name.
Torn apart from her sister and her children, Celie faces many hardships in life, including an abusive husband. With support from a sultry singer named Shug Avery, as well as her stand-her-ground stepdaughter, Celie ultimately finds extraordinary strength in the unbreakable bonds of a new kind of sisterhood. A story of love and resilience, it is easy to see why this beloved classic has continued to inspire both readers and viewers.
