The Woods Hole Public Library invites the community to join the Social Justice Book Group on Wednesday, July 16 at 7 PM, for a discussion of From These Roots: The True Story of Descendants of American Slavery and Their Battle for Justice and Repair by Tamara Lanier. This powerful memoir tells the story of Lanier’s fight to reclaim the narrative of her enslaved ancestors, whose images were used without consent by Harvard University, and explores themes of identity, institutional accountability, and reparative justice.

The book group provides a welcoming space for thoughtful, respectful conversation around issues of racial equity and social justice. All are welcome—whether you’ve read the book cover to cover or are just curious to learn more. July’s discussion will take place in person at the Woods Hole Library.

This discussion also offers an opportunity to prepare for a keynote appearance by Tamara Lanier on Monday, September 9 from 4:00–6:00 PM in Clapp Auditorium at the F.R. Lillie Building of the Marine Biological Laboratory. Her talk is part of an event co-sponsored by the Jewel Cobb Action Coalition and the Housing Assistance Corporation, and will also feature a panel discussion on civic engagement with Falmouth High School Students, and a discussion of the importance of local newspapers with Elizabeth Saito.

Copies of From These Roots are available to borrow from the Library or for purchase through Eight Cousins Bookstore.
