The Woods Hole Public Library Social Justice Book Group will meet to discuss Sinclair Lewis’s classic political novel It Can’t Happen Here on Wednesday, September 17, at 7pm. This discussion will be held both in person at the Library and remotely via Zoom.
Published in 1935, It Can’t Happen Here remains strikingly relevant in today’s political climate. The novel explores how a charismatic demagogue rises to power in the United States, threatening civil liberties and democratic institutions. Through the lens of small-town journalist Doremus Jessup, Lewis examines the fragility of democracy and the importance of dissent.
Please email the Library at whpl_mail@clamsnet.org to receive the Zoom link if you plan to attend remotely. Copies of the book are available to check out through the Library or for purchase at Eight Cousins Bookstore.
