The Woods Hole Public Library is celebrating a summer of reading and learning by inviting the community to reflect on what brings us together and ties us to our special village. The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program is “Woods Hole Reflections”, which for readers who have been around Woods Hole for a number of years, will call to mind the award-winning publication of the same name from the Woods Hole Museum. Originally published in 1983, Woods Hole Reflections chronicles the history of the village through the voices of people in the community and includes wonderful photographs and illustrations. Now we invite a new generation to create their own Woods Hole reflections through a chronicle of their summer reading. Participants will receive a blank notebook to use to keep track of their reading, in which they can choose to keep a list of books, write a few sentences about their reading, or even draw a picture to capture their thoughts. Each week, readers should bring their notebook to the Library to check in with the librarians, chat about their reading progress, and they will receive a special sticker to add to their notebook. The stickers are specially designed for the Woods Hole Library by artist David Browne, and can only be obtained by participating in the summer reading program. David will also be leading a series of drawing workshops on Wednesday afternoons in July that will tie into the Woods Hole Reflections Summer Reading theme. For his first class on Wednesday, July 2, at 3pm, artists will work on life drawing. For following classes, David will lead participants through creative exercises in drawing self portraits and artistic responses to music. Readers of all ages will be able to enjoy, reflect, and respond to the books and community that define their time in Woods Hole. The Woods Hole Reflections Summer Reading Program will begin July 1 and will continue through the end of August. Stop by the library to sign up, receive your journal, and start your summer reading journey!
