On Monday evening February 11 at 7:30 pm, the Woods Hole Public Library will be holding an event memorializing Mary Oliver and her poetry. People are invited to bring a few of their favorite Mary Oliver poems to read aloud. The evening will consist of people taking turns reading or reciting her poetry, with moments of silence in between. Local poet Eric Edwards will serve as master of ceremonies.

For those who do not bring copies of the poems they want to read, books of Mary Oliver’s poetry will be available at the library prior to the event.

Oliver spent much of her adult life in Provincetown, so we especially claim her as “ours”. Her poetry is known for its intimate observances of the natural world and its spiritual relationships.

One of our country’s favorite poets, Oliver won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and the National Book Award in 1992. She died on January 17 at her home in Florida.
