The Woods Hole Public Library is proud to welcome costume professional Nellie Kurz as the second speaker in the Lassalle Summer Dance Series, especially proud, as the Library considers her one its own, since her mother was a librarian at the Library while Nellie was growing up.

Nellie is a costume designer and constructor, working full time in the Costume Shop at the Boston Ballet for the last three years.  She has been in the theater industry since 2007 and has worked at a variety of theaters across the country, including the Goodman Theater and the Hubbard Street Dance Company in Chicago, and five seasons at the Santa Fe Opera.  She has made hats, corsets, tutus, and armor, and is always excited to learn a new technique and to share her unique skills. Nellie has a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin. Her particular skills in costuming are as a craftsperson and dyer, and her goal as an artist, she states “is to bring creativity and skill to everything I do.” That said, costuming dancers provides some very significant challenges, about which she has plenty of anecdotes! She will bring both costumes and sketches to further illustrate her subject.

Nellie tells us that “Sleeping Beauty is done until next year.  I am going to be able to bring a Blue Bird Tutu and a Sugar Plum Fairy Tutu to the presentation at the Library.” So if anyone wants to get very close to real ballet costumes, they should come to this event on Tuesday, July 25 starting at 7:30. The talk will be in the Library’s lower level meeting room. People are invited to use the Library’s lower entrance, on the right side of the building, which is handicapped accessible. This event is free and open to the public.
